Street Credibility ®

I don’t have to be what you want me to be. Muhammad Ali

Niemand kann wissen, was in Zukunft passiert.

Today there are many graffiti sprayers, graffiti painters, graffiti designers, spray designers, graffiti beginners, self-proclaimed or externally appointed shooting stars of the street art scene, street artists, facade designers, wall painters and whatever they may call themselves. The fact is that only a few of this despair of borrowers is an authentic history. Many of these painters were never tempted to produce their work wildly. On the contrary, in the past ten years I am not the only one who has noticed more and more people who position themselves primarily via books as street or urban artists and who do a lot for their street credibility (a bad word), although they mainly act within the approved framework .

Not that I acknowledge everything that happens unauthorized in public and private space as good, but I would like to counteract and contradict a general equation like this penned by the former Frankfurt OB Roth: „illegal graffiti = bad, legal graffiti = good“ . And I would also like to contradict this sentence from the same authorship: “(Real) art takes place in the museum. Graffiti is not represented in the museum, which is why it is not an art. ” The latter is obsolete anyway. At least Frankfurt museums are still fighting back ;-).

The discussion about what counts as an artistic or creative achievement and, above all, what should not be, is decided not only in Germany by the so-called educational and financial elites. Time is long overdue to think about why.

In the almost 30 years of my work, whether with the spray can, the computer or another design instrument, I have seen a lot coming and going. There are now a great many wall designers, graffiti sprayers, graffiti artists, street artists, urban art agencies and young people who discover graffiti or street art as a medium. Partly with a wild history, partly without. It’s great and it’s good. But the term graffiti art means more to me.

For me, art is always communication, every now and then real value creation. Contrary to many established topics, graffiti is a medium that communicates on a level that does not act linguistically, but nevertheless operates with typography. The act of design is the message, the style and the individual form of the typography is the peculiarity, the interaction between the place where the design is applied and the artist, the inclusion of the surroundings. All of these are means of communication.

My mind told me early on that I have to act (not just talk) if I want to change anything. I have done that and continue to do it.

In fact, I am more about my work / works, less about myself. The knowledge of your own impermanence is an enormous driving force.

I do not need any state, supposedly public and job-related confirmations about and for my actions. I do not need a representation in the form of a gallery or any other so-called instance. My presentation area was and is the so-called public space.

Mentioned crime education sprayers are booked by institutions and create trivial preventive work that should occupy the public and private space in advance and rightly be called visual kitsch, even if they may be technically well done.

Self-proclaimed graffiti and street art greats, as well as urban art and creative agencies (usually only one person), are active in this segment; they allegedly court only for perception or influence. What is positioned here as graffiti, street art or urban art has nothing to do with it, is irrelevant and boring design, sometimes not even more to be described as a craft and is only to be seen as a pedagogical attempt to discredit or discredit an artistic movement and its fans . to influence.

Sometimes areas with advertising aesthetics are implemented and sprayed one to one. What is created here does not serve an aesthetic idea, but should occupy areas and rooms in advance or serve the dictation of the exchange order / consumption. Or it follows the premise of supposedly fighting evil with evil, but it can be said here: there is no security and no guarantee can be given. Nobody can know what will happen in the future. Under certain circumstances, someone will continue to spray preventive designs in the future, unless we expose ourselves to a completely monitored system. I assume that nobody wants this.

I would like to clearly differentiate myself from this design variant and its protagonists. Seasoned stylewriters, graffiti artists and street artists have a comprehensible history and also a signature. Yes, the obligation to provide evidence also applies here. Those I mean know.

Style writing can also be kitsch, but it follows an inner and a different aesthetic than Photoshop works that adore each other. I didn’t do anything against photo-realism with the can, but I think it should be an artistic and not a preventive goal why you use this technique. Here is a successful interview by Florian Radtke from 2007 on this topic, which should explain what I mean by this authenticity:

Of course, graffiti or style writing is also a form of protest and a criticism of our exuberant world of goods with their abundance, also of elitist information. Maturity and use of the space around us, as well as a say and reflection on everyday life are topics that are making a progressive change in society through the permanent existence of graffiti / style writing / street art.

The word parallel world is gladly quoted here, but this is by no means the case. Not only style writing is a media mirror that opposes an aestheticized and coded I instead of the brand message here, but also the other varieties of street art and their relatives drive a satirical-critical form of communication in the general space through their presence. Critical thinking is encouraged and practiced in practice.

Incidentally, I cannot recognize much of what is being presented under the word art these days. In many places, street art is also simply illustration in public space (which, unfortunately in metropolitan areas, is anything but public since it is completely regulated).
